you know, senator mccain took on senator cruz this weeks, went after hagel, here is what harry reid said, the majority out of leader in the senate, what about this who filibuster process. >> i guess to be able to run for senate as a republican most place of the country, you need to have a resume that says i helped bill filibuster one of the president's nominees. >> what about it? >> first, i have to respectfully disagree with the lieutenant governor because he left out a couple of key facts. key fact number one, the sequester was created by the obama administration. so people are frustrated because you have a set of politicians on both sides unwilling to deal with something they created because it was a way for them to kick the can down the road. secondly, with regard to the hagel nomination, unfortunately, chuck hagel is dealing with his own poor performance as a nominee now. all the way back to your original question. there are many people in the democratic party who don't agree either there are many people in the democratic party who are in disagreement right now on what too do about

i think harry reid is a difficult position. he wants obviously something to move forward that helps address part of the problem and i think if you look at 2014 and you look at the midterm elections, look at key states where democrats have to defend, red states, alaska, west virginia is an open seat, arkansas, these are rural states where the democrats have a different perspective on gun rights and have a better relationship, if you will, with the nra. that being said, i think everyone has come to terms that something needs to be done and the question is what can be done, what should be done, then also, what can pass not just the senate, by the way, but also the house. that's why i think you are seeing this movement towards not universal background checks. i personally don't like that term because i think it exaggerates what the reality is. we're talking about criminal background checks, strengthening what is already in place so that it's fair and balanced for everyone. >> one thing, though, with the senate and dianne feinstein

harry reid said i made a deal with mcconnell it's going to be ok. the republicans aren't going to filibuster. dick durbin said at the time: cenk: positive environment, the republicans aren't going to filibuster anymore. they got a deal, so we didn't have to take it away. what happened today when senator hagel, a republican up for secretary of defense? the republicans filibustered. >> on this vote, the aye58 the nays 40, one senator announced present. 50% of the senators not having voted in the affirmative, the motion is not agreed to. cenk: even though 58 senators say yes let's end the debate and confirm him nope, not going to end the debate, because the republicans filibustering. now harry reid is shocked to find out that the republicans were not true to their word! >> the republicans have made an unfortunate choice to up the level here in washington. just when you thought things couldn't get worse, it gets worse. we need this vote today. why? times like this, it's nice to have a secretary of defense. cenk: man, harry reid, oh, you're killing 'em y

>> i think if enough nevadans tell harry reid they want something done about assault weapons, harry reid will do something about assault weapons. the bottom line is it's a matter of public opinion. it's a matter of what the public is going to demand. the nra does not represent the public. they don't even represent most nra members. so i don't think that harry reid or anyone else needs to be timid around these legislative bullies. i'm hoping that we go for it, we go big. of course, if we go big, we still probably can get some good things, maybe we can't get an assault weapon ban now but i think that eventually, we can even get that. of course, let me tell you, i own a gun. i don't want to see people's guns taken away. i'm against gun confiscation 100%, believe in the second amendment, but i believe we can have a balance between gun violence provision -- prevention and the right to own a gun. that's the reason why i think the president released the photo, to show that he's not anti-gun, he's against murder. he's against these extreme shootings that have happened and believes that we can ha
